About Image Converter

Use conversion when a file has the wrong format for a website, presentation or editor. JPG works well for photographs; PNG retains transparency and exact pixel values; WebP can combine compact output with transparent areas. Available encoders depend on the browser and are tested before becoming selectable.

The converter keeps the original dimensions. A format change alone does not guarantee a smaller file. Animated inputs become a still image. A solid background is required for JPG because it cannot store transparency; choose the colour before exporting to avoid unexpected borders. Original metadata is not carried across.

Image Converter: frequently asked questions

Which formats can I convert to?

WebP, JPG, PNG and AVIF, plus GIF, BMP and ICO for icons. AVIF and other formats are offered only after your browser has passed a test that it can create them.

Which image formats can I open?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF. For TIFF or SVG files, use Convert to JPG; for HEIC photos, export them as JPG from your phone’s photo app first.

Does converting change the image dimensions?

No. The width and height stay the same. The file size can go up or down, because each format stores pictures differently.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

PNG, WebP and AVIF can keep transparency. JPG cannot, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose in the options.

Is an animated GIF kept animated?

No. This converter saves a single still image. To work with animation, use GIF to MP4, Resize GIF or GIF to Frames.
