About Remove Silence

Removing every long pause tightens voice recordings; the threshold decides how quiet counts as silence. For videos only the silence at the start and end can be trimmed, because cutting pauses from the middle would put the sound out of sync with the picture.

Processing happens in this tab with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly; your recordings are never uploaded. The first video or audio tool you use downloads the 10 MB engine once and keeps it cached for next time. On phones, files are processed one at a time to stay within memory, and long recordings take a little longer. Keep the tab open until the download appears.

Remove Silence: frequently asked questions

How do I remove silence from a recording?

Can I trim only the silence at the start and end?

Yes. Choose “Only at the start and end”.

Why can only the ends be trimmed in videos?

Cutting pauses from the middle would put the sound out of sync with the picture.

−40 dB suits most voice recordings. Use −50 dB for very quiet rooms or −30 dB if background noise is counted as speech.
